How to Improve Vocal Range

There are few really big steps in singing. Figuring out how to sing in each of the registers and moving between the registers smoothly are the first two of these steps. The third and the final step is extending your vocal range in both directions. Singing exercises most often focus on singing high notes, as singers usually have lower notes just from speaking lower in their range.

Most of the singers seeking how to improve vocal range are interested in developing specifically high notes. You may discover that by working for higher notes your lower notes can also strengthen, this way effectively improving your vocal range in both directions. Lower notes can be improved by doing chest voice exercises, but that is a subject for another post. For now let’s just focus on developing your higher notes.

How to improve vocal range towards higher notes

Singing staccato (which means short and detached) is a great way how to improve vocal range in the direction of higher notes. Singing shorter and lighter helps you in singing higher notes, since they do not require using much heavy weight. Keep the muscles of your neck still and your larynx steady.

In order for you to figure out how to work the muscles inside your neck in your larynx, focus on that the muscles in your neck should not flex or tighten. Even if it means that you need to put less weight or pressure in order to make notes lighter and shorter. Keep the notes connected to your breath. Find a clear sound on a longer note and then sing notes that become shorter and shorter.
Try to move upwards by skipping notes along the scale. Open your back space as you ascend in pitch, feel your abs move as you start each note. Use the ee vowel at first; you may explore other vowels as singing gets easier. Try finding the right amount of air to blow so it does not become hard to sing lightly.

How to improve vocal range and vary the dynamics

As you feel your voice becoming more flexible in your upper register, you may want to find out how to vary volume, or dynamics, of your voice, just like professional singers do when singing no matter how loudly or softly. The purpose of the following singing exercise is to make you comfortable singing loudly of softly on any given note. Do not suppress the vibrato in your voice if you feel it starting to happen.

  1. Start singing the note of your choice as softly as you can.
  2. Continue singing it while slowly getting louder and louder. Do not squeeze your throat; rather try to gradually increase the airflow. Don’t worry if you feel a bump of wiggle – you need time to adjust to the new skill.
  3. Continue singing the same note while getting softer again.

Improving this skill takes a lot of practice. Don’t worry, you’ll notice that with time you will be able to start the tone much softer and grow it much louder.

As soon as you have learned how to improve vocal range and got comfortable with signing higher notes, it’s time to practice moving between registers. Just a few words for now on these exercises. The patterns for these singing exercises are fast, involve large intervals and require smooth transitions between registers while you’re moving up and down your vocal range. This also includes transitioning between your chest voice, middle voice and head voice, when range included in the exercise spans over an octave. This type of singing exercises is required to be able to actually sing higher notes instead of just avoiding them.
